What is a nurse practitioner?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse (APN) that is licensed in the classification of Nurse Practitioner by our regulatory college, the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). NPs provide comprehensive clinical care including the diagnosis and management of disease and illness, prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests, and initiating referrals to specialists. NP practice does not require physician supervision.
